Best First Gun for Women: How to Choose the Right Fit for You

One thing I always tell every student:
Don’t let anyone else pick out your first gun.
Not your spouse, not your friends, and not the guy behind the counter. This choice is about you. It needs to fit your hands, your comfort, and your confidence.

Choosing your first firearm can feel overwhelming, especially with so many options out there. But with the right mindset and a little guidance, you’ll be able to make a decision that fits your needs and helps you feel more prepared, not more confused.

Here’s what I walk through with all my students when they’re just getting started:

    Start With Why

Before you even look at a gun, figure out why you’re buying one. Your purpose will shape your decision.

    • Concealed Carry – You’ll want something compact, easy to conceal, and comfortable enough to carry daily.
    • Home Defense – A slightly larger gun with lower recoil and higher capacity might be a better fit.
    • Recreational Shooting – Look for comfort, ease of use, and something you want to train with often.

Having a clear purpose helps narrow your choices and gives you a goal to train toward.

Fit Matters More Than You Think

A gun that looks good on the shelf doesn’t always feel good in your hands. If it’s too small, it might be hard to control. Too large, and it might feel bulky or be tough to carry.

When I bought my first concealed carry gun, I made the classic mistake: I went small because I thought it would be easier to carry. It was actually harder to shoot, uncomfortable to grip, and didn’t give me the confidence I needed. Lesson learned. Balance is key.

    Try Before You Buy

If possible, rent and shoot a few models at a local range before committing. What feels good in your hands might feel completely different when you shoot it. Recoil, grip texture, trigger feel, etc. It all matters.

And if you’re local to Lynchburg, I offer private sessions where we test different firearms and I help you figure out what works best for you.

Don’t Let Someone Else Make the Choice for You

This is worth repeating: your firearm should be your decision.

I can’t count how many women show up to class with a gun someone else picked for them and it’s the wrong fit. It might be too big, too much recoil, or just not comfortable to shoot. Only you know what feels right and gives you confidence. Trust that.

    Start Small, Build Confidence

There’s nothing wrong with starting with a lower caliber. Starting with a .22 is easier to handle, less intimidating, and allows you to focus on building the fundamentals. Grip, trigger control, and sight alignment.

    • Less recoil = less flinching.
    • Less fear = better focus.
    • Better fundamentals = easier transition to larger calibers down the road.

Your First Gun Might Not Be Your Last

And that’s totally fine. Think of your first gun as a starting point. As your skills grow, your preferences will probably shift. What works for you now might not be your forever gun but it will help you get there.

    For Concealed Carry, Prioritize Comfort

Here are a few things I always talk about in my concealed carry classes:

    • Caliber vs. Confidence: I carry a .380. It’s what I shoot well, and that’s what matters most.
    • Recoil Management: Smaller guns often have more “kick.” Larger guns absorb recoil better but can be harder to conceal.
    • If It’s Not Comfortable, You Won’t Carry It: The best gun is the one you’ll actually train with and carry.

    Final Thoughts

Choosing your first firearm is personal. Take your time. Ask questions. Try different models. And don’t be afraid to change your mind as you learn more.
If you’ve already purchased a gun and it doesn’t feel like the right fit, that’s okay. You’re not stuck with it. Let it go and find one that truly works for you. Don’t settle just because you already made the purchase. Your confidence and comfort are what matter most.

And if you want help figuring it all out, I’ve got you. Whether it’s in class or a one-on-one coaching session, I’m here to help you build skills, confidence, and the mindset to protect yourself.
